Here is a simple way to start your garden if you do not want to take on a huge project. This is based on Mel Bartholomew’s idea of square foot gardening. This is a a square foot garden kit that assembles in 5 minutes, with no screws and no nails. It is constructed of 1″x8″x5′ lumber to create a 5′x5′ box (about 13″ individual squares) with 16 squares total. The recommended soil is a mixture of mulch, manure, peat moss, and vermiculite.
The lumber can be purchased for just under $50. The cuts are 3/4 inch wide every 13 inches. Be sure to cut a little off on the ends (as shown in the pictures), otherwise the ends are very susceptible to breaking.
