Although the news has been out during the past month, the threat on our Constitutional rights is real and in great danger.
Attorney General Eric Holder is pushing for Assault Weapons Ban:
The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.
“As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons,” Holder told reporters.
Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.
“I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum.” Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.
When the founding fathers wrote “The Bill of Rights” they were indeed discussing, what was at the time, “state of the art” firearms. These were rifles designed to be used by local military men in defense of their homes, and against a foreign invader. They were the assault weapons of their time. A strict interpretation of the “Second Amendment” would, with absolute certainty, permit a citizen of the United States, the right to keep and bear an assault rifle. Do you honestly believe that the founding fathers wanted American men to show up for a fight against a foreign invader with a sling-shot or a BB gun. These were not stupid men. If Americans showed up for a fight, they wanted them to win. Today the best weapon an average American can keep is a well designed and manufactured assault rifle.
The problem with violence are the people, not the tools they use. Guns are tools with no intrinsic evil or good about them. This is the mistake that the UK made, and every time they ban something, violence stays the same. Ban guns, people use knives, ban those, they use clubs…….evil people will always perform evil acts. That is the sad truth of things. Evil people avoid laws. This would prevent only good people from defending themselves.
