I don’t NEED a Gun, but I carry one

I carry concealed. About once a year, maybe less, someone who does not like guns asks me, “Why do you need a gun?”
The conversation usually follows something like this:
I tell them, “I don’t.”
There is usually a little pause. Then I am asked, “Then why do you carry one?”
I tell them, “I carry one for the same reason that I have car insurance.”
This confuses them because they do not understand the analogy and usually reply with, “But you need car insurance.”
I tell them, “No, you do not.”
They ask, “What if you get into an accident?”
I tell them, “Well, then I will need it.”
To clear things up a little I tell them, “I do not need car insurance until I’m in an accident. And only then will I need it.”
Sometimes they inject that “state law requires that you have insurance. What if you get pulled over by a cop?”
I tell them, “Well, then I will need it then, too, but I do not need it until I’m asked for it.”
Some liberals are so ignorant that they just do not understand. So in an effort to explain it to them, I tell them that “I do not need car insurance unless I’m in an accident or I’m pulled over by a cop. Until one of those incidents occur, I do not need it. It is the same with the gun I carry. I do not need it until I actually need it; and if that happens, I’ll really need it and I’ll be glad I carry one. I carry a gun for the same reason that I keep my car insured at all times, because I do not know when I will actually need a gun, or have an accident, or get pulled over by a cop.”

You could also use the same argument with a fire extinguisher. The question is whether or not you want to be prepared for emergencies. Simply put, a gun is tool that is used in emergencies.
This is quite possibly the coolest post I have seen on carrying.
This is a great example of how to explain “why to carry”. Good job!
People hate it when you answer a question with a question, however I’ve done it like this.
It’s my right to carry, and I’m offended by people who try to take away or strip my rights to carry. Just like many people would be outraged if they lost the right to free speach.
Both rights granted us under the law and in my humble opinion both just as important as the other.
Anyways, good read.
Grats!

Got to love a woman with a big gun that knows how to use it!
You need one for living in Arizona alone. And as a police officer – in Philly – I suggest that everyone who can carry, do so. Lord knows we can’t be everywhere.
