Earlier today I was on my way to the post office, nothing unusual about the 15 mile drive, other than there were cops lined up every few miles or so. I must have passed at least 5 of them. Going along with the flow of traffic (everyone is traveling at least 7 mph over the speed limit). Cop comes up from behind me; I think nothing of it. After a minute or so, turns the lights on, so I pull off to the side of the road.

Now for those who know me, I’m a firearms instructor, and I always have a gun on me, sometimes 2 or 3 of them. It has been many years since I was pulled over by a cop, but I did exactly as I teach my students. I had my driver’s license and CCW permit readily assessable and my hands on the steering wheel with the window rolled down before the cop walked up to the vehicle. In my mind, I was still trying to figure out why the cop had chosen me to pull over.

He came up to my vehicle and asked to see my driver’s license; I handed him both the license and permit. He then immediately told me to get out and exit my vehicle; we walked to the back. He asked if I had any weapons on me. I was thinking…Ummm….yea I do; which one would like to see first. So, I told about my taser and guns and he patted me down to remove them.

Next I got to sit in the back of the police car (but no handcuffs) while he looked at my vehicle front to back, inside and out, and waited for backup to arrive. My confusion as to what was happening was clearing up quickly as I listened to the police radio. Apparently there had been an armed robbery, a man with a “black gun” and “white SUV.” Can witnesses be more specific??? That is extremely general. I mean, come on! 90% of guns are black, and there are a ton of white SUVs. (wasn’t OJ Simpson Bronco white?)

So the other cop that arrived called in the serial number on my Glock; no match. Called in my driver’s license; no criminal history. Called in my CCW permit; completely valid. Then one of the cops was smart enough to ask the cop at the scene to find out what kind of gun it was. The cop at the scene asked the witness; again, it was a “black gun.” Then apparently the cop pulled out her duty weapon (most cops use a Glock as a duty weapon) and asked, “did it look like this?” Negative. The witness then told the cop that the end was rounded and not squared.

So after a total stop of about 15 minutes, the cops thanked me for my cooperation and commented that I had a really nice gun. I was happy that the cops were actually doing their job and fighting crime (or at least doing so with what poor witness description they had).
